Two recent studies provided a technical and economic assessment of the role that hydrogen can play in Atlantic Canada's energy transition towards a net-zero future.



The Feasibility Study of Hydrogen Production, Storage, Distribution, and Use in the Maritimes and the Feasibility Study of Hydrogen Production, Storage, Distribution and Use in Newfoundland & Labrador determined that hydrogen has the potential to be an essential part of the energy mix in Atlantic Canada - meeting up to 20% of energy demand by 2050 - while closing decarbonization gaps in sectors where GHG emissions will be difficult to abate.

Canada's Hydrogen Strategy
The world's energy systems are undergoing radical transformation driven by the need to mitigate climate change. Development of an at-scale, clean hydrogen economy is a strategic priority for Canada, needed to diversify our future energy mix, generate economic benefits and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Maritimes Hydrogen Feasibility Study
This study provides an assessment of the role hydrogen can play in the Maritimes' energy transition towards a net-zero-emission future. Hydrogen shows the potential to be an essential part of the 2050 energy mix, closing gaps in hard-to-abate sectors. However, the region faces challenges that must be addressed for hydrogen to reach its potential and critical policy and infrastructure investments need to be made in the near-term to initiate action in the region.

Feasibility Study of Hydrogen Production, Storage, Distribution and Use in Newfoundland & Labrador
The objective of the study is to provide a technical and economic assessment of the role that hydrogen could play in NL's energy transition. It is intended to build on the Maritimes Hydrogen Study by looking specifically at the opportunities and challenges of hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and use in NL and the potential for interaction with the rest of Atlantic Canada. NL has the necessary ingredients to become a major producer of hydrogen to serve its own energy needs as well as the neighbouring Maritimes provinces and international markets.

Halifax Hydrogen Report
Hydrogen and Decarbonizing Halifax Environment & Sustainability Standing Committee. Acting on Climate Together is the Municipality's long-term climate action plan to reduce emissions and help communities adapt to a changing climate. In the context of HalifACT, green hydrogen is viewed as a potential tool for decarbonizing heavy transport, natural gas heating applications and the electricity grid.
